since you don't know if he's gay or not.. you must learn to read his body language and see how he responds to certain things... you cannot do it without flirting with him but if he notices and gets weird.. then you can always play it off as ';no i'm not flirting wut? buddy i wuz just...(whatever)'; so i would try taking him out somewhere.. perhaps to the movies or something and try to read how he responds to being alone with you... maybe touch his arm and stuff during the movie and see if he gets weirded out... before this i would have just asked him if he's gay or not... maybe do it in a joking matter so that if he says no then you can be like haha alright... i know how difficult it is to see if someone else returns the same feelings... i'm currently in a close friendship where my friend is straight and i am bi (i'm crushing on her and clearly she doesn't feel the same way)... good luck!
Just go for it. The worst thing that could happen is that he says no. Even then the bright side is that you can move on. In reality the ';What If? '; question is way worse than a no. Its gonna be on your brain forever, and your gonna beat yourself up about it. Just do it you wont die.
